01 / THE BUSINESS IN FOCUS
A specific problem creates a recognizable product.
SPANX began with Sara Blakely’s attempt to change how an undergarment worked beneath clothing. Developing a version that stayed in place required more than the original idea: design, manufacturing and a way to explain the product to retail buyers all mattered.
Demonstration helped make an unfamiliar garment understandable. That connection between a practical purpose and its visible effect became part of how the brand entered the market. Blakely’s later ventures have their own identities; this portrait selects SPANX as the primary business, while her biography follows the wider entrepreneurial journey.
